Introduction to our history
Welcome to our page! Learn how the name 96 came to be, what 96 is famous for, what famous people came from 96, and what you can see and do while here.
Ninety Six was once the site of the first land battle of the American Revolution south of New England in 1779. The battle site is now located at the National Park in Ninety Six with the original star shapped earthen fort remaining and the only remaining patriot dug military tunnels left in tact in the United States. Ninety Six started as a simple trading post with the Cherokee Indians established by Robert Goudy in the early 1730’s. As the location became more known, it became a stopping point for back country travelers. Ninety Six eventually became a piviotal point and was the site of the upstate courthouse for the British, one of only two in the state. One at Ninety Six and the other at Charleston, SC.
Today, Ninety Six is still a beautiful backcountry rural area continuning to hold it’s small hometown feel. The Ninety Six National Park is here, and SC State Park Lake Greenwood is also located in Ninety Six. Welcome to Ninety Six!
